Consumer Credit Association Appoints New Director General

Brian Giles has been appointed as the new Director General for the Consumer Credit Association.

Brian is looking forward to introducing himself personally and meeting with CCA members in the coming weeks and months, but in the meantime here is a quick introduction:

Brian’s last role was Head of External Communications for the retail bank, Virgin Money. Previous to that he was Head of Communications for the former Northern Rock, before its acquisition by Virgin in 2012, and his combined career there spanned over 20 years.

During that time he worked with Executive, Marketing and Product teams, with broad ranging responsibilities for the development of external and internal communications, media engagement, financial reporting, promoting the brand and developing consumer PR.

Community work and engagement with charitable organisations were also parts of the role. This included liaison with third-sector organisations and the development of a financial education scheme for young school children.

Brian also lived through the collapse of Northern Rock and the ensuing financial crisis. Following the nationalisation of the former bank in 2008, he also became involved in communication with Government bodies and the financial regulatory authorities.

Brian was born in Newcastle in 1961 and started his working life, aged 16 as an apprentice engineer for Vickers on the bank of the Tyne. He was sponsored by Vickers through technical college and then through a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Northumbria, before graduating in 1984. He spent the next 12 years in the manufacturing industry in the North East, and gaining an MBA, before deciding to further his career in more general management roles in a new market  – taking a huge leap across to the financial sector in 1996, where he has stayed ever since.

Outside of work and family life, Brian likes to indulge in his main passions –watching football, local cricket umpiring, going to see live music acts and socialising with friends. He suffers the fate of many from his homeland and is a life-long Newcastle United supporter… “perhaps one day”. And if he isn’t doing that you can usually find him near freezing to death, with a pair of binoculars, birdwatching in some wind-swept nature reserve in rural Northumberland.

Brian comments: I am delighted to have this opportunity to work within the CCA and to represent the Home Credit sector. As I begin the process of building my knowledge and understanding of the market, I will also be looking to members to help me do that. I look forward to meeting you sometime soon.”
