Informing and supporting businesses in the
home credit industry

Hafod Finance Co (t/a Stewart Finance)

Ian Stewart worked for the family business James Stewart & Sons Ltd, Scottish drapers of Manchester from 1954 to 1992 (the Business having been sold to London Scottish Bank plc in 1988). In 1995 Ian re-entered the Home Credit Industry by purchasing a small home collected loan company called Hafod Finance Co Ltd. The company covers parts of Cheshire and Lancashire, with a head office based in Stockport and over 2000 customers. Ian’s son James now owns the company which employs 12 members of staff in total including James’ sisters Laura and Amy.

A Century of Support

The Stewart family has supported their relevant Trade Association for over 100 years. In 1979 our then Association, Retail Credit Federation (RFC) merged with the National Personal Finance Association (NPFA) to form the Consumer Credit Association UK (CCAUK). At that time, many retail credit companies had successfully started home collected cash loan activities primarily at the request of their customers.

Outcomes of Membership

For Stewart Finance, CCA membership has meant:

•  Regulatory guidance, seminars and workshops – here the company has s gained invaluable insight and assistance regarding all things regulatory over the many years of CCA membership

•  In the last 2 years this guidance has been pivotal in supporting Stewart Finance in making its new credit authorisation application with the FCA.  The compliance requirements around Anti Money Laundering, Responsible Lending Practices, Data Protection and Systems and Controls are extensive and the CCA has provided the firm with policy and procedure materials and training which were immensely useful and time-saving

•  General advice and support – the team at the CCA has always been available on the end of a telephone to offer help and assistance and Stewart Finance has gained valuable feedback regarding all things FCA during this changing time

•  Updated stationery - application forms and loan agreements conforming with new FCA regulations ensure compliance

Ian Stewart of Hafod Finance Co (t/a Stewart Finance) comments:

"Membership of the CCA is ‘a must’ for any company in the Home Credit Industry. Membership gives you confidence and the knowledge that support and guidance is just a phone call away. Membership offers workshops and seminars where you can meet fellow traders and discuss relevant issues which is invaluable given today’s changing climate."
